LinkedIn: What is the viewer seeing?
This is my little corner at the office. All my work is done virtually. My computer is the hub of my workspace. Since I interact with clients via HD livestreaming, I need a camera (it’s perched on top of the monitor, but you can’t see it too well), a high-end microphone (that’s the scary-looking thing on the right), and a keyboard. Also, there’s a phone and a little light that creates a warmer atmosphere. I often turn the main lights off in the office and just leave that one light on for effect. It’s cozier that way! And of course, I have the magnet a client gave me with words to live by as inspiration: “Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself.” That is my philosphy – 100%.
LI: Why did you set up your space this way?

It’s hard to tell, but there’s a big window to the right of me. The natural light has to be behind the camera or it messes up the lighting in the HD streaming. So, this set-up ensures the right video exposure.

LI: How does your view impact the way you work?

Having the window is nice when I need to take a break from staring at the screen. And, what you can’t see is that when I work with my teammates, I get to turn away from the screen entirely. As a manager, I feel this is very important. It’s far too easy to look at the emails popping up when the monitor is facing the same direction. When I talk to co-workers, I want them to have my full attention.

LI: How has your workspace changed over time?

Since launching my company in 2009, I’ve changed offices three times (soon to be four). Each time we outgrow a space, we have to move. So, I’ve kept my desk pretty mobile and easy to relocate. As far as what’s changed the most? I’d have to say my technology. Because we do all virtual work, we have to upgrade our technology pretty regularly. In my new space, I hope to bring in a lot more personalization to my desk and it’s surroundings (i.e. pictures my kids made, inspirational quotes, etc.)

LI: How do you wish it would look?

Soon I won’t have to worry about moving for a while! I’ll have to post a picture of the new desk next week. It will be clear of clutter, visually stimulating, and easy to navigate. Similar to what I have now, but with a little more pizazz!
