Allergies can become a source of indisposition and discomfort if the allergens are not detected. Food allergies are allergic reactions which are caused by the intake of certain food products. The set of allergic food products differ for each, but there are some common food products which are deemed as potential allergens.

How is an allergy test conducted?

Having any immediate allergic reaction can cause significant discomfort, and if it has occurred for the very first time, then it is better to get an allergy profile. The reaction of potent allergens is tested on the skin in a medical clinic by applying a sample of allergens on the skin. Testing of allergens on the skin can cause some uneasiness especially if the body reacts against that allergen but the symptoms of this induced allergy will subside after some time. Blood allergy test, on the other hand, is a straightforward process where the blood of the individual is taken and tested for possible reactions to known allergens.

Implication of positive allergy test result

If one is prone to allergies on particular foods then in medical terms one will get a positive test result. However, a positive test does not imply that the person is allergic to all types of food products. Usually, it is assumed that if the individual has tested positive for allergy, then the common allergy-causing food products are to be avoided altogether.

However, the result does not mean that all food products are to be avoided instead a positive test is a particular food. Moreover, if more allergies are present then the person will test positive for those products as well. Therefore, avoiding only, the products for which the person has tested positive is enough to keep allergies at bay.

However, there are instances when the test result is a false positive which means that even though the person is not allergic to that food product yet the test result shows a positive result.

Can allergies be developed at any stage of life?

People who have not suffered from bouts of allergic flare ups from childhood usually assume that he/she is not allergic to food stuff. On the other hand, an unexpected allergy attack in an adult is not very uncommon. However, that does not necessarily mean that one has suddenly started to react to a particular food product because allergies can remain undetected for a prolonged period. More and over, the symptoms of mild allergies are not always identified, but continued exposure to the same allergen can cause greater discomfort or a swift noticeable reaction. It is quite unlikely to develop an intolerance as an adult, but the possibility cannot be ruled out completely. Because in rare situations when the health of a person is already compromised due to some disease, then the immune system can set up a rogue reaction. Which has not occurred before, but then it cannot be deemed as a nutrition allergy as there are other reasons for that reaction.
