2016 MLK Day Annual March and Program: “Creating the Future by Reaching Into the Past”
Today’s MLK March began at Bethel AME Church in Stamford, C.T. where many gathered despite the cold temperatures to honor and commemorate Reverend Dr. King who left a legacy for the fight towards freedom in this country. As in 1963’s march on Washington, D.C. that led by civil rights leaders, clergy, and those willing to stand on the front lines towards change for equality so it was so today, 2016. Many civil rights activists and leaders were out; clergy, youth, and families to show homage to Reverend Dr. King. Jack Bryant, President of the NAACP stood tall at the podium in front of the congregation, and read the famous, most impactful speech ever created by man, “I Have a Dream,” spoken by Rev. Dr. King on Washington in the 60’s. Prayer was given by Apostle Dr. Herlene Streeter of Jesus is Lord Tabernacle in Stamford. State Rep. William Tong spoke, and new pastor of Bethel Robert Augustus Jackson, Jr. Many officials and police officers came out to show their respect, such as: Chief of Police Jon Fontneau, State Rep. William Tong, City Rep. Gloria Depina, State Rep.’s Terry Adams, Mr. Phillip E. Berns, & more. Other leaders present were: Apostle Herlene Streeter, Elder Gilbert Ginyard; MLK Planning Committee which included: Jack Bryant, Rev. Johnny Bush, John DaRosa, Linda Dozier, Cynthia Harris, Warren Hunter, Cynthia King, Marilyn Mayes, Nate Mayes, Karen McKeithan, & Tiffany Polite, along with other leaders.
Once the march began outside of the church led by Jack. You can see the overwhelming amount of youth who showed. Not only did they support they made sure they were in the beginning of the line right in back of clergy and officials. They were joyful and motivated. Families, elderly, and loved ones were in the mix of the crowd which marched down Richmond Hill Ave. to downtown Stamford pass the Rich Forum then turning around at the old town hall, and up West Main to the Yerwood Center. I was among that crowd. At first I was assisting Mother Wanda who attends Jesus is Lord under Apostle Streeter, but once she was unable to continue, a nice police woman took her back. I should’ve jumped in with her because I was last in the march to come through the doors at Yerwood Center, praying the entire way up the hill that I’d make it lol.
Once at the luncheon, the room was packed. Rev. Bush opened up and prayer while people from all over strolled in. Several families were present, Stamford natives, new-comers, clergy, friends, and officials who showed, such as; Mayor Martin. Amongst the crowd was Josephine Anderson of the Ferguson Library, Boys & Girls Club, Rev. Dr. Robert Perry; Shining Star Lodge, Urban League, Dorcas Chapter, French Speaking Baptist Church, Future 5, Person to Person of Darien, and many more.
It was a joyous, festive time, loving, greeting, encouraging, and pushing others to be better, and do better this year; end police brutality, build one other and to live out -not just King’s legacy- but all who’ve been fighting for equality and justice since the Civil Right’s Movement began. “Faith without works is dead.” (Bible-find the scripture-learn-stretch) God bless you.
BIBLE SCRIPTURE REFERENCE:
To accept Christ as your personal savior speak aloud & mean it in your heart (Romans 10:9-11)
What does God say in the Bible about racial prejudice, hatred, and jealousy?
10 As the Scriptures say,
“No one is good – not even one.
11 No one has real understanding; no one is seeking God.
12 All have turned away from God; all have gone wrong.
No one does good, not even one.”
13 “Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave.
Their speech is filled with lies.”
The poison of a deadly snake drips from their lips.”
14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “They are quick to commit murder.
16 Wherever they go, destruction and misery follow them.
17 They do not know what true peace is.”
18 “They have no fear of God to restrain them.”
16 There are seven things that the Lord hates and cannot tolerate (hates, detests; an abomination):
- A proud look,
- a lying tongue,
- hands that kill innocent people,
- a mind that thinks up wicked plans,
- feet that hurry off to do evil,
- a witness who tells one lie after another,
- and someone who stirs up trouble among friends.
27 Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. 28 Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now. 29 Don’t plan anything that will hurt your neighbors; they live beside you, trusting you. 30 Don’t argue with others for no reason when they have never done you any harm. 31 Don’t be jealous of violent people or decide to act as they do,
17 You do yourself a favor when you are kind. If you are cruel, you only hurt yourself.
29 Violent people deceive their friends and lead them to disaster.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality,
Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
Have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
